Storm Relief: How Freight Brokers and Truckers Can Help with Hurricane Recovery

Freight Brokers & Drivers Can Help with Storm Recovery

Storms and other disasters will test supply chains, but they also show how generous and resourceful 3PLs, carriers, and drivers can be. In light of the most recent Hurricane Dorian, here are three specialized organizations that assist relief and recovery groups locate and move goods to communities in need:

American Logistics Aid Network: ALAN is an all-volunteer non-profit organization with a web portal where freight brokers, warehouses, and truck fleets can post available resources and aid organizations can post their needs. Members include the American Frozen Food Institute, International Association of Refrigerated Warehouses, and Food Marketing Institute. alanaid.org

National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster: NVOAD is a coalition of more than 50 of the country’s most reputable relief organizations (faith-based, community-based, and other non-governmental organizations); 55 state/territory VOADs; and hundreds of other member organizations throughout the country. It’s a good first call if you’re looking to engage locally with a non-profit disaster-relief organization. nvoad.org

Federal Emergency Management Agency: FEMA’s Industry Liaison Program (ILP) serves as a central point of contact for suppliers seeking to do business with FEMA and connects suppliers with program offices in support of FEMA’s mission. fema.gov/about-industry-liaison-program

If you’re a motor carrier or logistics company and want to handle FEMA loads, note that the agency procures its transportation needs through the General Services Administration (GSA). Please follow this link—moveit.gsa.gov—for further details about GSA and their Transportation Management Services Solution (TMSS).
